Nursing Homes in San Diego
Nursing homes, also known as a skilled nursing facility or convalescent home, is a good choice for seniors that require skilled nursing or rehabilitation in addition to assistance with the activities of daily living. Residents of nursing homes require the medical attention of nurses and skilled medical professionals like physical therapists to manage, observe and evaluate you or your loved ones care. Residents of nursing homes, or skilled nursing facilities receive a higher level of skilled attention than those at an Assisted Living community.
Your loved one is a good candidate for a nursing home if he or she:
- Requires 24-hour skilled nursing care;
- Needs full assistance with personal care services;
- Can’t ambulate without the assistance of a wheelchair, walker or aide;
- Is bedridden or cannot reposition in bed;
- Needs intensive rehabilitative therapy (physical, occupational, speech, and/or respiratory);
- Requires tube feeding or is on an IV;
- Has to be on a ventilator or needs tracheotomy care;
- Needs aggressive wound care management (stage 3 or 4);
- Is terminally ill and requires hospice (end-of-life) care and/or;
- Needs custodial care and is on Medi-Cal for payment.
Your loved one may require a short-term stay at a skilled nursing home to receive physical, occupational or other therapy following a hospitalization resulting from an illness or accident. Additionally, if mom or dad cannot walk on their own or even turn themselves while in bed or has become bedridden, this is an option you should consider. Some Nursing Homes accept Alzheimer’s/dementia sufferers as well.
